Family Portrait: 1977-1982

I began this project in September of 1977 when my second son David was three months old. Although bringing up a family produced tremendous physical restraints, I discovered that these limitations could be used for sources of inspiration. Most family photographs are taken to record special occasions such as holidays, birthdays, and vacations. I wanted to record those mundane and hidden events of family life that we don’t see in the typical family album; 5:00am feedings, toilet training, babysitters, dirty dishes, messy rooms, messy relationships…these ordinary daily events became those moments that I chose to record.
